Radio's Affects on Artists
The radio makes artists become known, but what else does it do?
A positive affect of the radio on artists is that it makes them known and makes people start to listen to their music, which can make the listener gradually become a fan. That means people will also want to buy the song, or even the album, which also profits the artist.
A negative affect on the artist is that the song may be played to often making the listeners not want to hear them anymore.
Our Choice or the Industry's?
Who chooses the top songs? There are many radio stations or television channels that play songs and ask their listeners or viewers if they like it and if they should keep playing it. Sure, this means that we get a say, but who chooses the songs that they play to begin with? Most companies see the music we like and the music we reject and choose the artists that play that kind of music and choose the songs most like the ones we say we like to make a video for or to put onto the radio.
So is it more the industry's choice or ours? I think it's a mix of both for the radio and television, but who chooses the artists that are signed?
The music labels sign the bands that they think would do well, but does the industry control what the artists play? To some extent, yes. For example, why do you think Miley Cyrus wants to get out of her contract with Disney? Because she wants to do her own thing.
